GREEN LIGHT DRIVING ACADEMY - PERMIT PROCESSING PROCEDURES

The Texas Department of Public Service (DPS) is the state agency that is responsible for issuing a driver’s learner permit.

The DPS requires at least 2 days to process a learner’s permit.  The process normally takes one week, however, in some cases, due to the work load of the DPS (especially Fridays and Mondays), holidays or other DPS or Green Light Driving Academy closings, it can take longer.

We must have all documentation required for the permit (i.e. personal identification, TEA form, Application for License (form DL14-A) and permit processing fee) on Wednesday by office closing time.  Remember, we cannot take this information to the DPS until the student has completed the first 6 hours (3 days) of driver education, is 15 years of age (by that Thursday) AND has passed the written learner’s permit test given as part of the classroom instruction.

If a student misses any of the first 3 days of class, we cannot take the documentation to the DPS until that class has been made up (per our make-up policy.)

Green Light Driving Academy will take all documentation for permits that are ready to be processed on Thursday morning to the DPS.  So that the DPS has time to work through all of the documents, we must deliver these to them when they open which is normally 7:30 or 8:00 a.m.

The DPS will issue a permit receipt from the documentation that is taken to them.  After the receipt has been issued, Green Light Driving Academy will complete an additional document that provides the student permit test scores and the student eye test score.  This form (DE-964) will be returned along with the receipt to the DPS so that the learner’s permit can be issued.

You are welcome to take the information to the DPS yourself, however, be aware that the student will be required to take the permit test and eye test again at the DPS although they may have already taken it at Green Light Driving Academy and passed.  If you are interested in doing this, we can still verify that the documentation that you have is correct and prepare the DE-964 form for you.  You MUST have the DE-964 form with you along with the documentation if you are going to the DPS on your own.

We offer this as a service to you and your student and we hope you understand the limitations that we have due to the DPS schedules.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact our school.

Thank you,
