Q:  Is a teenager required to complete a driver education course before receiving their driver’s license?  ANSWER

What does the program at Green Light Driving Academy provide for my teen?

Green Light Driving Academy offers a state-approved driver education course for teenagers that includes 32 hours of classroom instruction, 14 hours of in-car (behind-the-wheel) instruction, learner permit processing and on-line in-car instruction scheduling.

ü     The classroom instruction is set up for 16, 2-hour sessions or classes.  During the school year, the classes are held Monday – Thursday for 4 weeks.  In the summer, the classes are held Monday – Friday for 3 weeks and then one class is held on a Saturday.

ü     The in-car (behind-the-wheel) instruction is taken AFTER the classroom is completed and the student has their learner’s permit.  The in-car instruction is set up as 7 lessons (2 hours each).  The student, using our on-line scheduling system, schedules these lessons based on the drive times posted.

Is a teenager required to complete a driver education course before receiving their driver’s license?

Yes, Texas state law requires a person 18 years of age and under to successfully complete an approved driver education course to obtain a driver’s license.

How much does the program at Green Light Driving Academy cost?

The total cost for the teen-driving course, which includes the classroom, and in-car instruction is $395.00.

At what age can a student enroll in a driver education class?

A student can begin driver education at age 14. We require that a student turn age 15 within 3 months of starting the classroom portion of the course.

How do I find out what classes are available and how do I register for classes?

When does a student get their learner’s permit?

During the first week of class, the student will be given their learner’s permit test.  If the student is age 15, has attended the first 6 hours of instruction (3 days), passes the test and we have the proper documentation they will have their permit by the second week of classroom instruction.

What is included in the learner’s permit test?

The learner’s permit test is given to the students during the 3rd day of class and covers Road Rules and Traffic Signs.  The test given is the same test that is given at the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The student starts studying for these tests on Day One using the Texas Drivers Handbook as a study guide.  The first 3 days of class are spent studying for these tests.  They are given a review test prior to the actual test so that they can see what kinds of questions could be asked and then the answers are discussed during class.

If the student does not pass either of the learner’s permit tests, what happens?

If a student fails one of the two written tests required for the learner’s permit, they can retake the test during the next scheduled class.  The student will re-take the test during the class break so that they will not miss any of that class’s lessons.

This would also apply to any student that is absent on test day.

NOTE:  If a student misses any of the first 3 class days, they can take the test as planned, but they must make-up the classes missed before we can take the documentation to the DPS for processing.

The student will not be given the same test again, but will be given one of the other 4 versions provided by the Texas DPS.

If a student fails a second time, a study packet is given to the student that must be completed in full before the student is given the test again.  The packet is a copy of the review test.  The correct answers must be given as well as the page number from the driver’s handbook.

Once the instructor has checked the packet for accuracy, the student is allowed to take the test 4 or more times, changing versions each time.

What documentation is required to obtain a learner’s permit?

After reaching 15 years of age and passing the written permit test, we must have the following documentation to get a learner’s permit:

ü     Birth Certificate

ü     Social Security Card

ü     Verification of Enrollment (TEA form) from student’s school

ü     DL-14A Application for Driver’s License (Green Light provides)

ü     $5.00 Permit Processing Fee

I have my permit, when can I start the driving portion of the course.

Green Light Driving Academy requires a student to complete the classroom portion of the course (excluding any make-up work) before starting the in-car instruction.

Can I miss any of the classroom instruction and still complete it within the schedule?

Refer to our complete Make-up policy here è MAKE-UP POLICY

I lost my permit, what do I do?

If a student has lost their learner’s permit – they must go to a local Texas Department of Public Safety to have a duplicate issued.

How long does a student have to complete the course?

Our contract provides the following for completing the driver education course phases.

ü     Classroom Phase – 6 months from starting class

ü     In-car instruction Phase – 1 year from starting class

Exceptions can be made to extend this time.

Green Light Driving Academy recommends 6 – 8 months to complete the full driver education course.

I lost the completion certificate (form DE-964) that Green Light Driving Academy gave me when I completed the course.  What do I do?

Green Light Driving Academy can prepare a duplicate completion certificate (DE-964).  The cost of this is $10.00.
